Bavarian authorities announced plans to buy 2.5 million doses of Sputnik V from Russia

Bavaria will buy 2.5 million doses of the Russian Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine if the European regulator approves its use. This, according to Reuters, said the Prime Minister of the federal state Markus Söder.

According to Zöder, the purchase could take place in July this year.

In March, the Russian company R-Pharm announced plans to start production of Sputnik V in Germany this year. According to Alexander Bykov, director of health economics at the company, production can be launched in June or July at a plant in the Bavarian city of Illertissen. “We are making every effort to start production this summer. We already have the equipment and personnel there, ”he said (quoted from Handelsblatt).

Bavarian Health Minister Klaus Holechek also admitted that production of Sputnik V in the region could begin as early as this year. “We have a memorandum of intent with the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), which is practically the authorized organization of the Russian government for the sale of vaccines that can be produced in Illertissen. I think this will happen within a year, “he said (quoted by TASS).

According to RDIF, the use of Sputnik V is allowed in 59 countries. In the European Union, the use of the Russian drug has not yet been officially approved: the EU regulator is still testing the vaccine. In particular, next week he will begin an investigation into whether the clinical trials of Sputnik V were ethical. One of the mandatory points of compliance with these standards is that people voluntarily agreed to participate in drug trials.

Military and civil servants, among others, took part in research on the Russian vaccine. In December, Reuters reported that nine of the 32 Sputnik V test participants surveyed said they were “not real volunteers.” At the same time, none of them said that they were injected with the drug against their will, the agency noted. In turn, the head of the RDIF, Kirill Dmitriev, said that there was no pressure on the participants and that all clinical practices were followed during the trials.
