The Vienna Capitals were nine seconds short of averting the semi-finals in the ICE ice hockey league on Wednesday. The Viennese conceded the equalizer in the home game against HCB Südtirol shortly before the end and finally had to admit defeat 2: 3 (1: 0, 1: 1, 0: 1, 0: 1) after extra time. Bolzano won the “best of seven” series 4: 2 and will face defending champion KAC in the final from Sunday.
Anthony Bardaro shot the game into the first extra time in this series after 59:51 minutes. In the overtime, the Caps could not use a power play and conceded the season-ending goal in the 74th minute. Angelo Miceli deflected a shot by Dennis Robertson that was unsustainable for goalkeeper Bernhard Starkbaum. It is therefore also certain that the KAC is Austrian champion for the 32nd time.
This means that in the final there will be a duel between the two best teams after the intermediate round. Bolzano now has the chance of the third title after 2014 and 2018. The previous play-off duels between South Tyrol and KAC each brought one victory. In the quarter-finals of 2018, South Tyrol prevailed 4: 2, and in 2019 the KAC also rose 4: 1 in the quarter-finals.
