More than 6 thousand migrants died in Qatar during preparation for the 2022 World Cup

More than 6.5 thousand migrants have died in Qatar during preparations for the World Cup in 2022. Reported by The Guardian.

These are workers from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka who have died since the country won the right to host the 2022 World Cup in 2010. The publication notes that official sources underestimate the number of deaths, as preparations for the tournament are still ongoing.

It is clarified that the announced figure does not include migrants from Kenya, the Philippines and other countries, from where people go to work in Qatar, which launched a serious program of construction of new facilities before the championship. In addition to seven new stadiums, dozens of major projects have been completed or are underway, including new roads, an airport, public transport systems, hotels and a new city that will host the tournament's final.

The heat wave in Qatar caused many deaths in 2019, according to the publication. At the same time, over the past ten years, the country's authorities have stated that most of the workers died of natural causes. Hiba Zayadin, a researcher at Human Rights Watch, stressed that Qatar should introduce a law allowing the autopsy in cases of sudden death. This will help establish the exact reason for what is happening, she said.
