What did NATO commandos armed to the teeth forget on the Russian freighter Adler? For the second day, the network has been discussing this strange landing of the Alliance Marines in the Mediterranean Sea on the deck of our civilian ship. In the footage posted on the official public of the EU, satisfied commandos demonstrate weapons of the flag of Greece and the European Union, and next to our captain of the ship with an assistant holding the Russian state flag in their hands. It is difficult to make out the mood by the faces of compatriots – they are smeared over.
“The inspection of the Russian vessel was carried out as part of Operation IRINI, which is being carried out by the EU mission in the Mediterranean from the Greek Navy F-459 Adrias. The purpose of the operation is to stop illegal arms transfers to Libya. The inspection of the ship was friendly,” the mission said on Twitter.
According to the EU, a group of Greek Navy commandos have boarded the Russian cargo ship Adler to find weapons that may be destined for the Libyans. And when he was not found … the marines with weapons arranged a photo shoot for their social networks.
At the same time, employees of the Turkish news agency Defecehub posted a shot of the beginning of the seizure of the ship, where one of the team members is being searched by an armed special forces soldier. The sailor stands with his back to the NATO special forces with his hands raised high behind his head.
And what kind of “friendly takeover” is this if the check is carried out by armed men? Or maybe our military should do the same in the Black and Baltic Seas? What if ships from NATO countries are transporting some kind of weapon?
– Honestly, I was surprised by this incident. I talked with many experts and came across two points of view. On the one hand, this is impudence and lawlessness. On the other hand, NATO officials say: “We have the right if we have suspicions.” You know, we have a lot of suspicions, but this does not give us the right to run around the ships that we just want! It seems to me that this is yet another form of manifestation of that unfriendliness that our enemies are trying to demonstrate to us. It seems to me that if this repeats itself, Russia will be forced to act adequately. And these enemies will feel very uncomfortable. Because Russia has a lot of techniques, reasons and facts in order to punish the impudent in the same way, – said Viktor Baranets, a military observer for the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper.
As a reminder, on April 1, 2020, the European Union announced the launch of a new EUNAVFOR Med operation in the Mediterranean Sea – Operation IRINI (from the Greek for peace) in the Central Mediterranean, which should be completed by March 31, 2021. The declared operation is the implementation of an embargo on the supply of weapons to the conflict zone on the territory of Libya through the use of air, sea and satellite forces and means. The mission's mandate allows for the inspection of ships on the high seas off the coast of Libya, allegedly carrying weapons or their components.
The commander of Operation IRINI was appointed Rear Admiral of the Italian Navy F. Agostini, and his deputy was Rear Admiral of the French Navy J.-M. Martinet, the headquarters of the operation is in Rome. The launch of the mission became possible following the Berlin Conference on Libya, held on January 19, 2020. Its participants, among other things, pledged to abide by and implement the embargo on arms supplies to Libya established by the UN Security Council resolutions.
It should be noted that the IRINI operation in NATO was announced as a change of the Sofia mission, which was to destroy the illegal maritime networks for the delivery of refugees to the territory of the European Union. At the same time, NATO combat units were involved in the operation, which before did not know what to do.
Being a seaman on a civilian ship today is far from safe. And it's not just Somali pirates. They may not only demand to raise their hands and search, but also deprive the cargo, as the owner and captain of the Russian ship Rhosus of the Russian Igor Grechushkin and Boris Prokoshev, who are now accused by the Libyan court of involvement in the explosion of 2,750 tons of fertilizers (ammonium nitrate), which is August 4, 2020 due to banal negligence of customs and Lebanese port officials, he killed 190 residents of Beirut, injured more than 4 thousand people and led to massive destruction in the city.
