RKN: Facebook will be held liable if it does not report data localization
Roskomnadzor sent requests to foreign companies Facebook, Twitter and Google demanding information on the databases of Russian users, writes TASS with reference to the press service of the supervisory authority.
In the absence of a response, the companies will be held accountable for violating Russian law, the department promised.
They noted that they were sending the corresponding requirements to the companies “once again”.
In the spring of 2019, Facebook and Twitter were already fined 3,000 rubles for a similar violation by a court decision. In the same year, changes were made to the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation.
Last year, the court fined Twitter and Facebook, collecting four million rubles from each of the companies. To date, the Twitter administration has not paid the fine, then Facebook paid the required amount. At the same time, both companies still have not responded to the demands of Roskomnadzor to provide the necessary information on the localization of the databases of Russians.
The Law “On Personal Data” obliges Russian and foreign companies to store personal information of citizens of the Russian Federation only in Russia. Failure to comply with the requirement is subject to a fine of one to six million rubles, for a repeated violation – from six to 18 million rubles.
