Rustam Tankayev, member of the Committee on Energy Strategy and Development of the Fuel and Energy Complex of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, announced the readiness of the United States to fight with Russia in order to prevent the completion of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline. He expressed this opinion on the air of NSN.
“The United States is ready to resist Nord Stream-2 right up to military confrontation. This is a principled position, ”he said.
The expert said that this is the position of the current head of the White House, Donald Trump, and how Joe Biden will behave if the election results are recognized is still unclear. “The next administration will also be absolutely unfriendly towards Russia, but there is a difference between the position of a politician and the position of a businessman. In politics, a businessman is like an elephant in a china shop. And he messed things up a lot during his rule, ”he said.
Tankayev stressed that from a technical point of view, it takes only a month to complete the construction of the pipeline, and “the problem here is absolutely political.”
Earlier it became known that after the inauguration of US President Joe Biden, the new administration will increase pressure on the project to prevent the completion of the gas pipeline. Republicans and Democrats in the Senate agreed on tough sanctions against project participants.
On November 26, the Norwegian certification company Det Norske Veritas – Germanischer Lloyd (DNV GL) refused to cooperate with the Russian Nord Stream 2 export gas pipeline under construction due to the threat of US sanctions. The company is forced to take such a step because of Washington's decision to expand the interpretation of the existing restrictions. Now they include not only the direct participants in the construction, but also those who provide them with any services.
The United States first imposed sanctions on participants in the construction of Nord Stream 2 at the end of 2019, shortly before the planned completion date. Then the owner of the Swiss pipe-laying vessel Allseas refused to cooperate with Nord Stream 2 AG. As a result, he had to look for a replacement, which was the Russian ship “Akademik Chersky”, but he also had problems due to the inability to find an insurance company willing to cooperate.
