Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova responded to statements by the US State Department on the reasons for opposing Nord Stream 2. She posted her comment on her Facebook page.
According to Zakharova, in its statement, the State Department admitted that America is undermining the principles of free trade and competition. The representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that the United States subordinates the laws of the market to its own interests, acting against the will of sovereign countries.
Earlier, the US State Department replied that the reason for Washington's rejection of the Nord Stream 2 project is geopolitics and America's concern about the growing influence of Russia. According to a spokesman for the State Department, the project could become a lever of influence of the Russian regime on some of the “closest allies” of the United States in Europe.
On February 23, it was reported that at least 18 European companies withdrew from the Nord Stream 2 project due to the threat of US sanctions.
