More than 14,000 scientists from 150 countries have called for immediate policy changes in response to the climate crisis. In an article published in the specialist journal BioScience on Wednesday, July 28, they pointed out that these changes are more relevant than ever to protecting life on Earth. Among other things, it should be about eliminating fossil fuels and better protecting biodiversity.

Two years ago, in a similar letter, about 11,000 scientists who signed this article already warned of a global “climate emergency.” Then the researchers said: if human behavior that leads to greenhouse gas emissions and other factors contributing to climate change is not fundamentally and permanently changed, then untold human suffering can no longer be prevented.

An urgent need to tackle the climate crisis

Since then, numerous events such as floods, fires and a sharp rise in the temperature of the earth's atmosphere have clearly shown the consequences of continuing the current policy, the article notes. According to researchers, 2020, for example, was the second hottest year in the history of meteorological observations. In April 2021, the concentration of climate-damaging carbon dioxide and methane in the earth's atmosphere was higher than ever before. “The extreme climatic events and patterns we have seen over the past few years – and even the past few weeks – underscore the urgency of tackling the climate crisis,” said Philip Duffy, one of the authors of the appeal, of the Woodwell Climate Research Center in the US state. Massachusetts.

The researchers looked at 31 “vital indicators” such as an indicator of the state of the Earth, including the thickness of glaciers, the extent of sea ice and forests. They recorded negative record values in 18 of 31 parameters. In particular, according to the authors, glaciers are melting 31 percent faster than 15 years ago. Global sea levels and sea water temperatures are higher than ever before.
