“A colossal insult to Moscow”: why Beijing returned Chinese names to Russian cities on its maps
Piontkovsky notes that it was no coincidence that this happened just before Xi Jinping's visit to Moscow.
It is no coincidence that Beijing returned Chinese names for a number of Russian cities and territories of the Far East on its maps just before Xi Jinping's visit to Moscow. We are talking about Chinese territories annexed by the Russian Empire in the 19th century.
This opinion was expressed by the Russian oppositionist and publicist Andrei Piontkovsky in an interview with Apostrophe.
The expert notes that it is no coincidence that this happened just before Xi's visit to Moscow.
In his opinion, this is a colossal insult inflicted on Moscow.
“It is no coincidence that this was done precisely in these days, when the Russian authorities are desperately dependent on Beijing: they are hoping for a visit, for its political support. They are well aware that in this atmosphere in Moscow no one will utter a word ,” says the Russian opposition leader.
Piontkovsky noted that the Kremlin “swallowed” the insult, because none of the Russian propagandists or diplomats reacted to the incident.
“After half of Siberia was named by Chinese names – where is Maria Zakharova, the great Russian patriot, she has been drinking since then and could not get out? Even in the telegram channels of silence. And silence is a sign of consent, therefore, half the work is already done. Moscow remained silent, therefore, it half admitted that this territory was annexed ,” he said.
The expert is sure that the most important thing for the Chinese authorities now is to keep their “agent” Putin in power.
“The Chinese understand that no matter who comes to power (in Russia. – Ed.) – it is unlikely that some European-oriented liberal parts of society will come, rather some nationalist and left-wing ones – they will all accuse Putin of surrendering China's national interests .They will lose their most valuable asset.” agent, they need to keep him in power. With this, about Xi will come to Zelensky if he comes to Kyiv,” Piontkovsky summed up.
Recall that the Chinese Ministry of Natural Resources has published new maps with Chinese names for Russian cities and territories. These territories were captured by the Russian Empire in the 19th century.
Earlier Andrey Piontkovsky explained the hype around the Chinese leader's visit to Moscow.
The Kremlin said that Xi Jinping will visit Russia on March 20-22. After that, Xi Jinping plans to talk to President Zelensky.
