Air leak from the Russian segment of the ISS accelerated five times

The air leak from the International Space Station (ISS) has accelerated fivefold, RIA Novosti reported, citing a source in the rocket and space industry. According to Business Insider, the leaks occur on the Russian segment of the near-Earth laboratory.

“When the leak was recorded in September 2019, the station was losing 270 grams of air per day. In August, the first isolation of the ISS crew was carried out, because the rate of leakage doubled – up to 540 grams per day, ”said the source of the Russian agency.

According to him, in September, the leakage rate increased to 1.4 kilograms per day, which required re-isolation of the crew.

Roscosmos told the agency that nothing threatens the safety of the ISS crew.

According to Business Insider, no air leaks have been found in the US segment of the ISS. The publication names the Russian modules “Zvezda” and (or) “Pirs” as probable sources of air losses. “There are only two modules left that could have leaked: those that the crew did not check because they were inside them, watching the rest of the station,” writes Business Insider.

According to TASS, referring to a source in the Main Operations Control Group of the Russian segment of the ISS, it is “premature and incorrect” to draw conclusions about the source of the air leak at the station, since the latter may occur during the activation of the American service equipment, which was turned off during the check of the American segment of the ISS …

At the end of August 2018, Dmitry Rogozin, General Director of Roscosmos, spoke about an air leak from the Russian manned spacecraft Soyuz docked to the ISS, the source of which was a drilled hole 1.5 mm in diameter. The manager stressed that the hole in question had been sealed with Kapton tape.
