An airplane with a car engine was tested in Russia

The light aircraft Yak-18T with the APD-500 engine, developed on the basis of the engine from the Aurus series cars, has successfully passed all pre-flight tests.

This was reported by the RIA Novosti agency with reference to the press service of the Central Institute of Aviation Motors named after P.I. Baranova (CIAM). Yak-18T is a light training four-seater aircraft, which will also be used in the passenger version.

Reportedly, the car has successfully passed all pre-flight tests with the implementation of the entire range of flights and runs at the training airfield. “The tests that took place at the airfield for small aircraft first consisted of launches, testing modes, engine throttle response and measuring static thrust on a tethered aircraft; then the Yak-18T performed a set of jogging and landing flights. During the tests, the engine showed stable operation and the ability to provide the necessary flight characteristics, “said representatives of the CIAM press service.

The source also reports that the APD-500 aircraft demonstrator engine with a capacity of 500 horsepower was created by CIAM on the basis of the Aurus automobile engine. For safe operation in flight, components and systems specially designed for use in aviation were added to the original design.
