Andreas Herzog's Admira: The jump into the deep end

Maria Enzersdorf. It is quite possible that Andreas Herzog would continue to look after Israel or another national team had it not been for the pandemic. Austria's record international (103 games) achieved his greatest successes in this country with Rapid, but his roots lie with Admira Wacker in the southern part of the city, where the 52-year-old is now working as a club coach for the first time.

Coming home is also a by-product of the crisis. “There were two interesting offers from national teams, but that didn't work because of Corona,” Herzog says. He terminated his contract in Israel in June 2020. In the spring, the ex-midfielder agreed to Admira and took over a club for the first time in his coaching career.

Born in Vienna, like his father Anton himself, he played for Admira, and when he was 15, Herzog switched to Rapid. He has also lived in a house in nearby Breitenfurt for 20 years, and his sons Luca and Louis play in Admira's offspring.

The Bundesliga team has undergone a radical change, the average age is 23 years. As a talent promoter, Herzog has already worked as a U21 team boss. “If we improve bit by bit, we'll have a really exciting team,” he said. In any case, his debut was a success. Admira beat Neusiedl am See 4-0 in the first round of the Cup. WSG Tirol is waiting for the league opener on Saturday. (red.)
