The Arctic studies curriculum was introduced into the program of the International Arctic School (IAS) – the first educational institution of this kind in the Far East, which opened in Yakutsk in September 2020. “Along with the international training program, the priority of the school is the study of the Arctic. We started this year a course in Arctic studies for students in grades 7-10. It was developed by specialists from the Arctic Research Center (ANRC). The course begins with an introduction to the history of the discovery and development of the Arctic, as well as the seminar “The history of the development of the Arctic in persons”. Separate blocks are devoted to the Arctic vector of development of foreign countries, the history of science and technology in the Arctic, and the peculiarities of this territory. At the end of the course, students are given lectures on the history of the development of the Yakut Arctic.

About school

The International Arctic School in Yakutsk is designed for 220 students. Now 186 people from 22 districts of the republic and the city of Yakutsk study in it.

The school has a swimming pool, an assembly hall, a video conference room, a simultaneous translation system, a workshop, classrooms for robotics and quadcopters, VR / AR, 3d, sports, gym, choreographic halls, climbing wall, planetarium, video studio. The classrooms have interactive panels and other equipment that meet modern educational standards.

For schoolchildren who came from the districts of the republic, a boarding school for 80 places is provided. “We are a full-time school. Before lunchtime – lessons, after lunch – developmental activities. Children live in a boarding school nearby, we must provide full employment from morning to evening,” Tatarinova said.

The SIA pays much attention to the development of IT competencies. “The school's policy is not to prohibit the use of gadgets, but to educate children about the use of digital resources,” says the head of the school.

In particular, a separate Apple class has been created at the school, where they teach how to create applications for the Apple environment. For the next academic year, the school is recruiting a group for training under the Yandex Lyceum program. Recently, the winner of the largest competition for schoolchildren and students in the field of information technology “My profession is IT” was the team “Devo unicorn”, which included the students of the ISS. The creation of the Arctic school, according to Tatarinova, reflects the activity of Yakutia in global Arctic politics. “We do not just give a good education to children. We bring up people who are deeply immersed in our history, culture, economy, striving to be useful to their native republic, country,” said the agency's interlocutor.

Satellite schools

The International Arctic School disseminates its expertise and technology. For this, a network of satellite schools has been created. It includes 15 schools in 10 regions of Yakutia, including the Arctic territories of Bulunsky, Verkhoyansky, Momsky, Oleneksky uluses. Pupils of these schools undergo internships in the specialized classes of the IASH.

“We are looking for options for cooperation not only with schools. We have concluded agreements with the North-Eastern Federal University named after M.K. Ammosov, the Arctic Research Center, the Association for the Development of the IT Industry of Yakutia, the Academy of Talents and the Academy of Digital Technologies of St. Petersburg, – noted the director. – This year there were two educational tours of the IASH students with the assistance of the Committee for Arctic Affairs of St. Petersburg. International Baccalaureate

Another feature of the school is in-depth study of foreign languages and the introduction of an international baccalaureate program. This is a universal school curriculum with a general curriculum that allows you to consider education in another country equivalent.

“The international baccalaureate diploma program is intended for students in grades 10-11. This year we prepared all the necessary documents and became a candidate school. We created a language center that brought together not only English teachers, but also others – French, German, Chinese, Korean. , Japanese “, – said the director.

From the next academic year, eighth-graders will have lessons in mathematics, biology, history in English. The director notes that the translation of instruction in English is a challenge. “All our teachers are intensively engaged in English. Not only teachers, but all the staff of the ISS. For us, English was a priority this year not only for children, but for the entire team,” she added.

The school also supports the study of the languages of the indigenous peoples of the North. “This year, when accepting children for the Arctic regions, there will be a separate competition in June, and the general competition will take place in August. Groups will be formed depending on the interest of students. It is necessary to introduce the most diverse forms of development of languages and cultures of the peoples of the North,” the teacher concluded.
