Artificial intelligence defeats humans in drone racing for the first time

Experts at the University of Zurich have developed algorithms that, for the first time, allowed an artificial intelligence (AI)-controlled quadcopter to outflank human-controlled drones in a race. However, while the computer cannot calculate the ideal flight path in real time, the developers have to do it themselves and in advance.

The American Forbes told about the new victory of AI over humans. The tests took place on an experimental race track. The drone, which flew according to the created algorithms, competed with two world-class pilots and showed the fastest lap.

The University of Zurich had tried to defeat the human drone operator before, but AI drones were slower than even inexperienced pilots. The developers built the flight path using a set of curved lines, while the person always acted more sharply. Now the specialists have created an algorithm, calculating the optimal route at each point of the flight.

This approach takes a lot of resources and time to calculate the ideal trajectory. The AI drone is not yet able to carry out the calculation on its own in real time, and the developers spend more than an hour to calculate the two minutes of the victorious flight.

However, researcher Philip Foehn promised that in the near future the computer will calculate everything by itself and in real time.

The University of Zurich expects their expertise to be useful for a variety of tasks, including:

the development of urban air taxis; delivery of purchases; inspection of the infrastructure of the settlement; the work of emergency services.
