Van Dijk does without the EM after his knee injury
Austria's opponents Netherlands will have to do without Liverpool top defender Virgil van Dijk at the European Football Championship (11 June to 11 July). The 29-year-old announced on Wednesday that he was foregoing the EURO in order to concentrate fully on rehab after his knee injury. Van Dijk had been operated on for a ruptured cruciate ligament in his right knee in late October.
“I have decided not to go to the European Championship and instead go into the last phase of my rehabilitation during the season break,” said the central defender in an interview with the Liverpool website. The Dutch will welcome the ÖFB team in Amsterdam on June 17 (9 p.m.), which will still play in Group C in Bucharest against North Macedonia (June 13) and the Ukraine (June 21/6 p.m. CEST).
