Bishkek residents demand resignation of Interior Minister after bride kidnapping and murder
In Kyrgyzstan, a man kidnapped a girl to marry. But, having received a refusal, he killed her and committed suicide. This is not the first such tragedy in the republic. Residents went to protests and demand the resignation of the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, correspondent of the TV channel “MIR 24” Bekmamat Asanbekov.
The moment of the abduction of 27-year-old Aizada Kanatbekova was caught on a video surveillance camera. The intruders were waiting for her on the way to work. Despite the early morning, the street was busy. But passers-by did not seem to notice how several men pushed the girl into a red car.
The police were informed about the incident on the same day at 7:30 am. One of the eyewitnesses called. Six hours later, her mother filed a report about her missing daughter. Law enforcers began to search.
Aizada Kanatbekova was found only two days later. A shepherd on the outskirts of a village near Bishkek accidentally discovered her body, as well as the body of a man. According to the investigation, the kidnapper first dealt with the girl and then committed suicide.
In the last year alone, 92 cases of bride kidnapping were registered in Kyrgyzstan. And one of the most high-profile cases was in 2018. A man kidnapped a 19-year-old girl. He was quickly found and detained. In the station, left alone with the failed bride, the kidnapper killed her and tried to commit suicide. He survived and received 20 years in prison. But the very fact that it happened in the police station then caused a resonance in the society. A new fatal kidnapping forced people to protest.

Several hundred people gathered near the building of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Bishkek today. Their demand is to dismiss the Minister of Internal Affairs and the head of the metropolitan police. According to the protesters, law enforcement officers do not take the facts of kidnapping for the sake of marriage seriously enough. In the Criminal Code, such an act is classified separately from the article “Abduction of a person”, the punishment for it is lighter. And, in fact, according to some rally participants, bride kidnapping has never been a Kyrgyz tradition.
“It has always been a voluntary conspiracy between the bride and groom. And what is happening now is a natural abduction of a person. I would like our people to share traditions, opportunities for young people and real crime, ”said Umay Arykova, a resident of Bishkek.
An hour before the start of the rally, the capital's police called a press conference. The head of the Bishkek Municipal Department of Internal Affairs asked for forgiveness from the relatives of the murdered woman. Investigators explained that often the search is slowed down by gaps in legislation. They simply did not have time to track down the suspect by his phone number.
“The investigator gathers certain material and brings it to the prosecutor’s office. We agree there, go to court. This also takes a very long time. No cell company will give us without a permit, ”explained Ulan Aitbaev, head of the criminal police service of the Bishkek Internal Affairs Directorate.
The president of the republic reacted to the resonant crime. In his address, Sadyr Japarov promised that all the guilty would be punished, and noted that he took the case under his personal control. At the moment, the police have identified the accomplices of the abduction. Two of them were detained.
The protesters in Bishkek promised to meet in a week. The main requirement is to thoroughly understand what happened and not allow this to happen again.
