Canada handed over to Ukraine BREM Bergepanzer: how they will increase the number of captured vehicles

Canada sent Bergepanzer 3 armored recovery vehicles to Ukraine. Armored vehicles are designed to evacuate damaged equipment from the battlefield.

Bergepanzer are well protected and use tank chassis as they are used directly on the battlefield. Defense Express military expert Ivan Kirichevsky told Channel 24 about this.

What Bergepanzer can do

Until now, the main armored recovery vehicles in our army have been vehicles based on the T-54 and T-55 tanks. The current situation has shown that the Ukrainian army needs as many ARVs as possible. So, even a volunteer initiative arose to recycle captured T-62s on them.

At the same time, the Western allies provide our state with much more advanced machines of this type. Bergepanzer are protected. They will also be easier to maintain, since their base is the Leopard 2 chassis. The partners transferred German Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, so there should be no problems with the additional supply of spare parts.

In addition, the Bergepanzer, like any tank-based ARV, is designed primarily to pull tanks.

The more such machines we have, the less will be the need for “tractor troops” or other improvised means to collect the next Russian trophies, which they will definitely throw when they retreat, the military expert explained.

How Canada can help

Ottawa announced another package of military aid to Kyiv. It will include:

  • about 8,000 155 mm ammunition,
  • 12 anti-aircraft missiles from the stocks of the Canadian Forces to support air defense systems,
  • more than 1,800 training ammunition for 105 mm guns to support the transfer of Danish, German and Dutch Leopard 1 tanks.

In addition, Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand said that the country has begun deliveries of additional Leopard 2 main battle tanks, which were announced at the end of February. In total, Canada promised to provide Ukraine with 8 Leopard 2 main battle tanks.
