The Chinese Foreign Ministry expressed its outrage at Nancy Pelosi's visit and accused the US of trying to “blow up” the country's sovereignty. Beijing has accused Washington of using the Taiwan issue to its advantage.
What they say in Beijing
The Chinese Foreign Ministry threatened to retaliate against Pelosi's visit to Taiwan. At the same time, Beijing is transferring the consequences to the power of the island and the United States.
China will unequivocally take all necessary measures to resolutely defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity in response to the visit of the US speaker. All the consequences arising from this should be borne by the US side and the separatist forces of “Taiwan independence,” Beijing said.
The Foreign Ministry also said that the “Taiwan issue” is internal to China, so the US should not interfere.
Pelosi's reaction
Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi said after her post at the Taipei airport that her visit was not inconsistent with relations with China under the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979. That is, a document adopted in the year of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Washington and Beijing.
Pelosi also stressed that her visit is evidence of support for Taiwanese democracy. According to the speaker of the House of Representatives, the US opposes Beijing's unilateral attempts to change the status quo of Taiwan.
Our discussions with Taiwan's leadership will focus on reaffirming our support for our partner and moving forward our common interests, including the advancement of a free and open Indian-Pacific. America's solidarity with Taiwan's 23 million people is more important than ever as the world faces a choice between autocracy and democracy, Pelosi said. Another threat to Russia against Ukraine has arisen in the world – China's invasion of Taiwan, which Beijing considers its territory. During her Asian tour, Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi did travel to Taiwan and landed in Taipei on August 2.
At the same time, China continues its aggressive rhetoric and announces military exercises: first in the Gulf of Taiwan, and now around the entire island. Everything that is known about the escalation in Southeast Asia, we have collected here.
