Crown of the Sun: what will the annular eclipse tell about?

Today is the day of the annular solar eclipse. It was not possible to see him in Russia for more than 50 years. Nathan Eismont, a leading researcher at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences , told the MIR 24 TV channel what this phenomenon is and what impact it can have on the Earth and on humans.

– What is an annular solar eclipse and why is it so special?

Nathan Eismont: We can get a better look at what is most interesting to physicists who study the sun. This geometry is achieved when we clearly see the sun's corona, and it is cut off from the radiation of the rest of the sun. Most interesting for physicists studying the corona. There are even special devices, and they are used not only on Earth, but also on spacecraft, the task of which is to cut off the disk of the Sun from its corona. We now get this almost for free.

A small part of the Sun is still visible. Why are eclipses possible at all? We are lucky that the angular size of the Moon is almost the same as the angular size of the Sun, so the Moon can cover the Sun. Now the Moon is located in such a way that it is a little far from the Earth, so we see the solar radiation ring, and not just the corona. This phenomenon is interesting for amateurs. There was a time 30 years ago when all physicists were waiting for such an eclipse, when they could fully carry out their experiments on the study of the Sun.

Since then, we have made great progress in our instrumental capabilities, they are realized with the help of Earth satellites.

The most successful application is the American Soho project. Then the spacecraft was placed in the vicinity of the so-called point L-1. This is about 1.5 million km from the Earth in the direction of the Sun. This device had the opportunity to constantly study the Sun using coronagraphs. They are designed so that they have an artificial moon inside. There all the time they have such an eclipse, and you can continuously observe what was done in this project, which worked for 20 years. Our experimental physicists could never get so much data if they used only these eclipses, which we could now observe. …

    FOLLOWING

    – What is the correct way to look at the Sun during an eclipse?

Nathan Eismont: To say that there will be eye damage is short-lived. To look with eyes not protected by at least smoked plates is indeed a risk to vision. Of course, you don't need to smoke glasses now. Everything is done in advance so as to reduce the radiation of the Sun, if you slowly look at it, so that your vision does not suffer, and you can see everything well enough.

I still remember from childhood the impressions of the first solar eclipse that I managed to see. They were preparing for it, and everyone smoked these glasses, all the people who knew that it would be. It always makes a very strong impression, and not only on people.

Animals also react to solar eclipses. It seems that they have a presentiment. In my opinion, this is a kind of exaggeration, but when it happens, they get very worried, they are extremely nervous.

With a solar eclipse, the local weather changes slightly. One feels that it is getting fresher, the breeze begins to blow.

    – How does the eclipse affect the planet?

Nathan Eismont: This is manifested in the tides, they reach their maximum at this time. Staying ashore during this high tide is more risky than on normal days. But these are fairly regular occurrences. In this sense, a total solar eclipse is not very different from those cases when the moon's shadow misses. There is no reason for concern.

    – How often do such eclipses occur?

Nathan Eismont: It's not that common if we want to see it all over the Earth. If somewhere in certain areas of the Earth's surface, then this is about once every four years. There are places on Earth where this eclipse, if not completely complete, is close to what it is now.

    – When will it be next time?

Nathan Eismont: It counts here for a long time, hundreds of years. We are quite good at counting the motion of bodies in the solar system – not only the Earth, but even asteroids. This is a great achievement relative to the days when there were no computers and such observation devices as now.

The position of Apophis, an asteroid that will come very close to Earth in 2029, is already known and can be predicted with an error of tens of meters.
