On Thursday, May 19, Andrei Sadovy met with the representative of the Holy See, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher. During this, the mayor of Lvov urged representatives of the Vatican to call a spade a spade.
Andriy Sadovyy told about this in a telegram. He noted that the Secretary for Interstate Relations of the Holy See, Paul Richard Gallagher, arrived in Lviv from the Vatican.
The silence of the Vatican is perceived as treason
Andriy Sadovyi stressed that Lviv has one of the largest Catholic communities in Ukraine. Therefore, the lack of statements from the Vatican is perceived as outrageous.
Initiatives about the unity of Ukrainians and Russians, and even more – the silence of the Vatican, are perceived by many Lvivians very painfully – as treason, – he stressed.
The head of the Lviv City Council added that in the confrontation Ukraine is now supported by the most powerful states from around the world. At the same time, it should be understood that the Vatican has a special power. And it is not about weapons, but about the word.
He recalled the visit of Pope John Paul II in 2001. Then he visited Lvov and urged the Ukrainians not to be afraid. Now the same appeal has been made in the city, but it is addressed to the Holy See.
Don't be afraid to call a spade a spade! – Sadovyi stressed.
The Pope caused ambiguous attitude
In early May, it became known that the Pope decided not to go to Ukraine, which is suffering from the war, but to Russia. Like, he wants to personally communicate with Vladimir Putin and influence him to stop the war.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reacted to the relevant initiative. They stressed that neither Ukraine, nor another state, nor NATO are responsible for this war. Putin decided it. And neither he nor the aggressor state itself plans to stop. And this should be clear both for the Pontiff and for the community around the world.
Subsequently, the Pope held a meeting with the spouses of the defenders of Mariupol. They handed over to the Pontiff photographs of fighters who were injured by the Russian military. Subsequently, the spouses of the military noted that the Pope sincerely strives for the evacuation of the defenders of Mariupol. And during a conversation with them, he held the women's hands and looked worried.
Vladimir Zelensky, in an interview with an Italian channel, commented on the situation with the Pope's desire to resolve the conflict between Ukrainians and Russians. The President of Ukraine noted that the Russian flag has become a symbol of the killings. So there can be no talk of any reconciliation, because there was a mental split between the peoples.
