The number of victims as a result of the earthquake that occurred in Haiti last week increased to 2,189 people, more than 12 thousand people were injured, TASS reports with reference to the civil protection department of the republic.

According to the department, 1,832 people died in the South Department, another 218 died in the Grand Anse department, 137 died in the Nipp department, and two died in the Northwest department. In addition, 12,268 injured were registered, 100 thousand buildings were completely or partially destroyed. Currently, rescuers continue to search for people under the rubble.

Recall that the 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Haiti happened on the morning of Saturday, August 14. The epicenter of the seismic event was 40 kilometers from the Le Quet commune, the focus lay at a depth of 10 kilometers. A few minutes later, a series of 5.2 aftershocks began, which intensified the destructive effect.

The country's authorities have decided to introduce a state of emergency for a month. On August 17, a three-day national mourning was declared.
