Epidemiologist explains the need for a second dose of coronavirus vaccine
Alexander Gorelov, deputy director for scientific work of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said that the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine is necessary to consolidate the effect and form more stable immunity.
“By refusing the second dose of the drug, a person actually negates the effectiveness of the first dose,” RIA Novosti quotes him as saying.
Gorelov stressed that in order to achieve an immunological effect, it is extremely important to complete a full course of vaccination. He explained that after the first dose, a person develops “humoral immunity, but it only lasts for two to three months.”
The epidemiologist added that the optimal interval between vaccinations is considered to be 30-45 days, but against the background of a pandemic, the interval has been reduced to 21 days.
The head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova said that there is no critical increase in the incidence of COVID-19 in Russia, she described the epidemiological situation in the Russian Federation as stable.
