Erdogan ruled out Turkey's transformation into “refugee storage for Europe”
Europe should stop closing its borders from refugees, since Turkey is not a “warehouse for refugees,” Turkish President Recep Erdogan said. His words are reported by the newspaper Hürriyet.
“Europe, which has become the center of attraction for millions of people, cannot remain aloof from this problem, closing its borders only to protect the well-being of its citizens. With this approach, Europe turns its back on universal human values. Turkey does not have to be a refugee storage for Europe, ”Erdogan said.
According to him, in the first seven months of this year, the Turkish authorities caught 77 thousand illegal migrants. At the same time, about half of illegal immigrants over the past three years have been immigrants from Afghanistan, the Turkish leader said.
“We know that about 300,000 Afghans currently live in our country,” Erdogan added.
At the same time, the Turkish president emphasized a special attitude towards the Syrians.
“Of course, these people will stay in our country, learning our language, improving their professional skills and ensuring social harmony,” Erdogan said. Those who do not do this will be expelled by the Turkish authorities, the head of state said.

On August 15, a conflict erupted in Turkey between Syrian refugees and the local population. After the stabbing, which resulted in the death of one Turk, riots broke out. Local residents started setting fire to cars and throwing stones at the houses of refugees. Among the victims were children.
Prior to this, in early August, the Turkish authorities began building a concrete wall on the border with Iran. The reason was the influx of refugees from Afghanistan after the resumption of hostilities in the country and the offensive of the Taliban. The total length of the wall should be approximately 300 km.
