The EU has allowed the Pfizer vaccine against coronavirus in children aged 5 years and older

The dose of Comirnaty vaccine for children aged 5 to 11 will be lower than for children 12 years and older (10 mcg versus 30 mcg).

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has recommended expanding the use of the Pfizer/BioNTech coronavirus vaccine to vaccinate children 5-11 years.

This is reported on the EMA website.

“As in the older age group, this is done in the form of two injections into the shoulder muscles with an interval of three weeks”, – says in message.

According to EMA, preliminary studies were carried out with the participation of 2 thousand children aged 5-11 years. They have shown a 90.7% effectiveness of the vaccine in preventing symptomatic COVID-19. Possible side effects in children aged 5 to 11 years include pain at the injection site, fatigue, headache, redness and swelling at the injection site, muscle pain and chills. These effects are usually mild to moderate and improve within a few days after vaccination, the EMA assured.

The EMA Committee on Human Medicines (CHMP) therefore concluded that the benefits of Comirnaty in older children 5 to 11 years of age outweigh the risks, especially for those with medical conditions that increase the risk of severe COVID-19. Now the CHMP will send its recommendation to the European Commission, which will issue a final decision.

Recall that earlier WHO noted that vaccination against COVID-19 will allow the world to overcome the coronavirus and get out of the pandemic. In particular, by the end of this year, 40% of the population should be vaccinated for herd immunity , by the summer of 2022 – 70%.
