The expansion of NATO, which began after the collapse of the Soviet Union, objectively poses a threat to Russia, but Moscow does not intend to slide into a cycle of provocations. Tiberio Graziani, an Italian political scientist, chairman of the Vision & Global Trends analytical center, shared this opinion in an interview with Lenta.ru.

According to the expert, the provocative actions of the alliance on the Russian borders and in other “boiling points” like the Donbass or the Black Sea may lead to a conflict with Russia.

Moreover, in the event of a military escalation, its consequences would be catastrophic for the European Union, the expert warned. “Europe would turn into a theater of military operations with inconceivable consequences for the entire globe,” Graziani predicted.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the course of drawing Ukraine into NATO with the subsequent appearance of missiles at the Russian borders creates unacceptable threats to Russia's security and provokes serious military risks. According to the diplomat, the high degree of confrontation caused by Washington's actions could cause a large-scale conflict in Europe.
