Famous historian, archaeologist and teacher Yuri Kovalenko died at the front
In the battles for Bakhmut, the famous historian, archaeologist, teacher, guide and patriot Yuri Kovalenko died. In the spring of 2022, he defended the Chernihiv region, and in parallel, he defended his thesis.
Yuriy Kovalenko was from Glukhov, Sumy region. Back in 2014, he volunteered to go to the East to defend Ukraine. Without waiting for the medical examination, he left for Ilovaisk.
Kovalenko was a famous historian
In one of the interviews, he said that he has several formations. The first is a psychologist, the second is electricity, and he graduated from the Faculty of History as an adult.
For more than 30 years he was engaged in archeology, history, studied the funerals of the Second World War, was a military archaeologist, a volunteer. Prior to the full-scale war, he worked as the head of the research National Reserve “Glukhov”.

Received a number of awards and honors
Kovalenko explored the ruins of Baturin, which was destroyed by Moscow invaders in 1708, he found the location of the main temple of the hetman's capital – the Cathedral of the Life-Giving Trinity.
Yuri Kovalenko was the author of more than 70 scientific articles. In 2021 he defended his dissertation and became a candidate of historical sciences. By that time, he was defending Ukraine in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the contract was signed in December 2020. In 2021, he participated in the battles for Avdiivka, was awarded the distinctions of the General Staff and the commander of the Joint Forces.
Kovalenko was a member of the Black Tulip organization, which returned the bodies of dead heroes to their homes.
For his work in the Black Tulip he was awarded by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
