Lausanne. Fifa President Gianni Infantino is likely to have frozen in his mailbox on Sunday morning. There was a letter, which from his point of view was rather unpleasant. The football boss, who is always keen to maximize profits, has been promoting the vision for months of holding the World Cup every two instead of every four years after 2026. More games, winners, TV times, sponsors – more money, it sounds simple. But he didn't ask the other “big player” in the sports world about it. Infantino forgot about the Olympics – and the IOC.
“At no time did the FIFA President contact IOC President Thomas Bach to discuss the proposals,” the IOC announced on Sunday morning. This intensifies the public debate about the efforts of the world football association. A collision would be inevitable from summer 2028.
IOC: “Strong reservations”
It is surprising because Infantino is an IOC member himself. He knows the reflex and resentment that individualism can arouse in Lausanne. The IOC diplomatically expressed its “worries” about the Fifa plans and at the same time supported calls for a “broader consultation” of all concerned. You have “strong reservations and a certain concern,” said IOC spokesman Mark Adams.
With the Olympic makers, Uefa or South America's association have the most powerful supporters. Adamas warned that a different World Cup rhythm would have a major impact on tennis, cycling, golf, gymnastics, athletics or even Formula 1, which could have “negative effects”.
Infantino has to revise all of his plans. Because he made his World Cup bill without the host. (fin)
