Multipurpose fighter Su-57 at the rehearsal of the International Aviation and Space Salon MAKS-2021
Moscow. July 20. INTERFAX.RU – On Tuesday, the International Aviation and Space Salon MAKS-2021 begins its work, where a presentation of a new light fighter of the 5th generation, the first demonstration flight of a passenger MS-21 with a Russian engine and a meeting with the President of the Russian Federation on civil aircraft will take place.
The jubilee, 15th MAKS airshow will be held on July 20-25 on the territory of the Flight Research Institute (LII) named after Gromov in Zhukovsky near Moscow, from July 21 it will be open to the public. MAKS has been held in Russia every two years since 1993. It is held under the patronage of the President of the Russian Federation with his personal participation. MAKS is organized by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation and the state corporation “Rostec”, the organizer is JSC “Aviasalon”.
As Interfax reported, the Farnborough air show was canceled in 2020. In addition, the world's largest air show at Le Bourget will not be held in 2021 due to the coronavirus. Despite the difficult situation with the spread of COVID, it was decided not to cancel MAKS-2021, but only those who have a QR code about vaccination or a negative PCR test will be able to visit it.
A dark horse
The most anticipated event at MAKS-2021 will be the presentation of a new combat aircraft announced by Rostec, whose symbol is a chess knight.
“The main premiere of the air show is a fundamentally new lightweight fighter of the 5th generation, created by the Sukhoi company,” Rostec said.
The presentation will take place on the first day of the exhibition, and it will also be possible to see it online on the Rostec and UAC YouTube channels, as well as on the project page – checkmate.uacrussia.ru, where the countdown to the premiere has already begun. So far, little is known about the new car. On the eve of “Rostec” published a video, which showed the contours of the aircraft and its image in full face. It is noteworthy that, judging by the video, it will be a single-engine fighter. At the moment, all combat aircraft used in Russia are equipped with two engines, while single-engine fighters are widespread in the world – these are the American F-16 Fighting Falcon and F-35 Lightning, the Swedish JAS 39 Gripen and the Chinese J-10.
The experience of creating single-engine aircraft was also in the Soviet Union – the MiG-21 and MiG-23 created in the 1950s-1960s became one of the most massive fighters in history, more than 15 thousand of these aircraft were built in total. The return to the development of single-engine fighters was announced in December 2020 by the head of Rostec Sergey Chemezov. According to him, the corporation is working on the creation of a light fighter of the 5th generation in manned and unmanned versions, it is also possible to jointly develop such an aircraft with foreign partners.
“Indeed, the creation of a combat aviation system of the future in the light and middle class is being worked out. According to the plan, it can be a universal platform, in manned and unmanned versions. The concept and tactical and technical requirements for such a complex are being worked out,” Chemezov said.
He noted that this topic is interesting from the point of view of promoting such an aircraft for export. In February 2017, Chemezov announced that Russia and the United Arab Emirates would jointly develop a 5th generation light fighter. According to him, the aircraft can be created on the basis of the MiG-29, work will begin in 2018 and will take about 7-8 years.
In total, this year Rostec will present about 500 samples of equipment, Chemezov said.
“Including about 50 new products – planes, helicopters, UAVs, engines and much more. A number of significant negotiations and signing of agreements in the field of development and delivery of aviation products are also planned,” the head of the state corporation said.
Rosoboronexport intends to maximize the potential of MAKS-2021 to promote Russian developments in the field of aviation and air defense (air defense) abroad, the company said yesterday.
“This year, Rosoboronexport has already signed contract documents worth more than $ 5 billion, 80% of which are for products for the air force and air defense. MAKS-2021, which will be attended by more than 30 delegations from about 20 countries at our invitation, will become the starting point for new negotiations and new contracts “, – said the general director of the company Alexander Mikheev, whose words were quoted in the press service.
According to Rosoboronexport, at the MAKS static exposition, the guests of the air show will be able to familiarize themselves with “export bestsellers and potential leaders of the world military aviation market”: the fifth generation Su-57E fighter, MiG-35, MiG-29 and Su-35 fighters, a tanker aircraft Il-78MK-90A and military transport aircraft Il-76MD-90A, helicopters Ka-52K, Mi-28NE, Mi-35P, Mi-35M, Ka-226T and others.
“At the open exhibition area, the partners of Rosoboronexport will also be able to familiarize themselves with the air defense and electronic warfare systems promoted by the company abroad. Among them are the latest Tor-E2 anti-aircraft missile system and, in the form of models at the Almaz-Antey exhibition stand, anti-aircraft missile systems. S-400 Triumph and Antey-4000 and an absolute exhibition novelty – the Vityaz S-350 anti-aircraft missile system. The Avtomatika concern will present the Kupol and Pishchal UAV countermeasures, and the Kronstadt group will present the latest unmanned aerial vehicle Orion-E in reconnaissance and strike version, “the press service said.
They noted that in addition to this, MAKS visitors will see flights of Russian aerobatic teams on combat aircraft, which occupy leading positions in their segments of the world market. “Russian Knights” will present aerobatics on the Su-35S and Su-30SM fighters, the “Falcons of Russia” will show the coherence of work and maneuvers on the Su-27, and the “Swifts” will demonstrate the high capabilities of the MiG-29. The pilots of the aerobatic team “Berkuts” will make single and group flights on Mi-28N and Ka-52 helicopters.
For the first time, the UAC will show the general public the MS-21-310 medium-range passenger aircraft with the Russian PD-14 engine and the regional Il-114-300 – their prototypes will be presented both in the flight program and at the static stand of the air show. The regional SSJ100 will also participate in the exposition and flight program: visitors will see a business version of this aircraft.
For the first time, Russian Helicopters will demonstrate the latest civilian aircraft Mi-171A3, Ka-32A11M and Ansat-M.
The American concern Boeing will present its commercial products at MAKS and will sign a number of agreements in the field of services. The exposition at the Boeing stand will include aircraft of the 737, 787, 777X families. Taking into account the dynamic growth of the air cargo transportation market in the world, a line of cargo aircraft will be presented among the models: narrow-body 737-800BCF, medium-haul 767-300BCF and wide-body 777 Freighter.
For the first time, European Airbus will present to the Russian audience the wide-body A350-1000 aircraft, the narrow-body A220-300, as well as the EC145 twin-engine helicopter. Judging by the MAKS business program, the company also plans to sign on the sidelines of the show.
