Specialists from MT Aerospace, which works with the European Space Agency, have developed a new type of material that will be useful in one of the most important parts of the rocket – the fuel tanks.
This material is known as carbon fiber reinforced plastic. This technology has been around for several decades and is widely used in the automotive and aerospace industries. But until now, no one has successfully made a rocket fuel tank out of the material.
Researchers overcame some difficulties and were able to achieve this. The result is lighter fuel tanks. Weight is directly related to launch cost, so lowering it is important for rocket manufacturers. In the future, CFRP technology can reduce the weight of the carrier by two tons.
