Two and a half hours of moderate to 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity per week reduces the likelihood of hospitalization for COVID-19 by more than a third. This is the conclusion reached by scientists from the University of São Paulo. The preprint of the scientific article is published on the MedRxiv portal.

Experts interviewed about a thousand respondents who recovered after being infected with coronavirus. Based on the results of the survey, they divided them into two groups: leading an active and sedentary lifestyle. The first category includes citizens who go in for sports for at least 10-20 minutes a day (depending on the intensity of the load), the second – those who devote less time to physical exercise.

Scientists have confirmed that sufficient physical activity, in accordance with the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), reduces the risk of hospitalization with coronavirus infection. However, the researchers clarified that the patients who entered the clinic carry the virus equally hard, regardless of the degree of activity before infection.

“Trainees have a higher immune status, therefore, resistance to infections. That is, a smaller dose of the virus enters the body. But ultimately, the course of the disease largely depends on the amount of SARS-CoV-2, which nevertheless penetrated the body, “Olga Smirnova, professor of the Department of Human and Animal Physiology at Lomonosov Moscow State University, commented in an interview with Izvestia. It is the high viral load that explains the similar course of the disease in hospitalized patients with different lifestyles.
