The documents signed by Moscow did not contain a promise not to expand NATO to the east. This is how they commented on the publication of archival documents of 1991 with statements about the non-expansion of the alliance in the German Foreign Ministry, RIA Novosti reports.
“We are not a historical commission, and in the agreements signed with Russia there was no promise not to expand the alliance,” the German foreign ministry said.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova reproached NATO for not fulfilling security guarantees. Prior to this, the German agency Der Spiegel published information about a 1991 document recently discovered in the British National Archives, in which Western countries declared the unacceptability of the expansion of the North Atlantic bloc to the east.
