Heiko Maas

The German Foreign Minister revealed the role of Europe, the USA and the USSR in the country's reunification. This was reported on the website of the German Foreign Ministry.

In an article dedicated to the Day of German Unity, he said that without the trust of European and American partners, as well as the leadership of the Soviet Union, German reunification would be politically impossible.

The head of the department also recalled how hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets in East Germany and took part in demonstrations for freedom. “In both Central and Eastern Europe, women and men took to the streets and, through their desire for freedom, razed walls and barbed wire to the ground,” he said.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated the FRG government on the Day of German Unity. The Russian leader sent a congratulatory telegram to President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The “Agreement on the Final Settlement with regard to Germany” (the “Two Plus Four” agreement) was signed in 1990 by the GDR, FRG, USSR, USA, France and Great Britain. He legally consolidated “Germany's full sovereignty over its internal and external affairs.” According to its terms, the allies in World War II renounced their rights in relation to Germany.
