There is a place on our planet that is so remote from all parts of the land that the closest of all the representatives of humanity to it were the astronauts of the ISS, who are only 400 meters from the “oceanic pole of inaccessibility.” What is Point Nemo and what people use this place for, read the Rambler material.
This unique point on the world map appeared recently: in 1992, using computer modeling, it was calculated by the Croatian research engineer Hrvoje Lukatela. He was looking for the most distant place in the ocean from land. This area occupies 37 million square kilometers in the South Pacific Ocean, its exact coordinates are 48 ° 52 ′ S. sh. 123 ° 23 ′ W etc.
The closest to Point Nemo is the uninhabited Dussi Atoll, located 2,688 kilometers from it, while the closest inhabited area is Easter Island.
The most remote Point Nemo turned out to be not only from land and people, but also, in principle, from representatives of the fauna. In this area, dominated by the strongest currents, only bacteria and protozoa were able to survive. In fact, Point Nemo was the cleanest area on our planet. But soon they found a use for it.
The maximum remoteness of the “oceanic pole of inaccessibility” from all living things has led representatives of various space agencies to the idea of sinking the space ships that have served their time. According to the Air Force, more than a hundred vehicles have already been flooded at Point Nemo. According to the researchers, the damage to nature and people is minimal. But, alas, Point Nemo can no longer be called the cleanest place on the planet.
