Sources in the Turkish Interior Ministry reported on the plans of the terrorist group “Islamic State” (IS, banned in Russia) to kill the mayor of Istanbul Ekrem Imamoglu. However, as NTV writes with reference to the General Directorate of Security (EGM) of Turkey, so far there have been no attempts to kill the politician, or arrests of suspects.
At the same time, EGM noticed that the protection of the mayor was increased.
In September 2019, Turkey found a connection between the opposition and terrorists. Thus, the head of the branch of the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) in Istanbul, Kanan Kaftancioglu, was sentenced to 9 years, 8 months and 20 days in prison on charges of promoting terrorism. As stated by Kaftancioglu herself and her associates in the CHP, the court's decision is politically motivated and in fact “was made not in court, but in the presidential administration.” They believe that such a step is revenge of the country's authorities for the fact that the member of the CHP Ekrem Imamoglu became the mayor of Istanbul in the summer of 2019.
