ISS orbit will be adjusted in preparation for the arrival of Japanese space tourists

Moscow. October 12. INTERFAX.RU – The orbit of the International Space Station (ISS) will be raised on Tuesday by 940 meters in preparation for the arrival of the Soyuz MS-20 manned spacecraft and its return to Earth.

According to preliminary data from the ballistic and navigation support service of the TsNIIMash Flight Control Center (part of Roskosmos), at 10:05 Moscow time a command will be issued to turn on the engines of the Zvezda service module of the ISS Russian segment, which will operate for 38.9 seconds.

“After carrying out the corrective maneuver, the station's orbit altitude will increase by 940 meters, and the average orbital altitude will increase to 420.45 km,” Roscosmos reported.

Upon completion of the correction, the maximum orbital altitude of the station will be 441.11 km, and the minimum – 419.44 km.

According to the state corporation, the orbit correction is carried out in order to form ballistic conditions before the Soyuz MS-20 spacecraft is launched into orbit and landed.

Earlier, the ISS orbit was corrected on September 24.

On May 13, the state corporation reported that two Japanese space tourists will join the crew of the Soyuz MS-20 spacecraft, which will leave for the ISS in December.

As noted in the message, the flight duration will be 12 days, the commander will be the Russian cosmonaut Alexander Misurkin.

In the summer, it was reported that Japanese space tourists Yusaku Maezawa and Yozo Hirano are preparing for a flight to the ISS. Maezawa is a Japanese businessman, founder of Zozo Inc., is the 14th richest person in Japan. Hirano is a producer at Space Today. On the ISS, Hirano will be responsible for lighting Maezawa's flight.

Currently, a crew of Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Novitsky, Pyotr Dubrov and Anton Shkaplerov is working on board the ISS; European Space Agency astronaut Toma Peske; and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Akihiko Hoshide.
