The US Senate may drop sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. This became known to Politico.
According to the newspaper, most likely, the bill on sanctions against Nord Stream 2, proposed by the Republican Ted Cruz, will not be approved. It is noted that earlier the Democrats consistently supported the new restrictions, but on Wednesday they “signaled a significant change in their position.” The main reason was the unwillingness to interfere with US President Joe Biden in interacting with Russia.
On January 4, it became known that the United States was preparing a package of sanctions against Nord Stream 2. According to a spokesman for the US Republican Party, 60 out of 100 Senate votes are required to pass the bill, which implies restrictions on the gas pipeline.
At the same time, in December last year, Joe Biden signed the country's defense budget for 2022, in which new sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline were abandoned. However, the law provides for funds to contain Russia.
