Japanese Prime Minister announced the need to resolve the issue of the South Kuriles

Yoshihide Suga

The Japanese government considers it necessary to solve the problem of the ownership of the southern Kuril Islands. This was stated by the Prime Minister of the country, Yoshihide Suga, quoted by the NHK TV channel.

The Japanese prime minister stressed that the territorial dispute with Russia should be ended, and not left to its solution to future generations. “We will continue negotiations with Russia based on the agreements between the two countries,” Suga said in his keynote speech at the opening of the parliamentary session.

As a result of the Second World War, a peace treaty was not concluded between Moscow and Tokyo. The main obstacle to its signing was the unresolved territorial dispute around the southern part of the Kuriles – the islands of Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and the Habomai group.

The Japanese side calls the South Kurils “northern territories” and does not recognize Russian sovereignty over them. Moscow, in turn, does not recognize the very fact of the territorial dispute. Washington, like Tokyo, considers the South Kuril Islands to be part of Japan.
