At the General Assembly, Macron supported the reform of the UN Security Council and the restriction of the right of veto

Emmanuel Macron called for limiting the use of the veto in the UN Security Council. This right is actively abused by Russia.

The French President made such an appeal at the general debate of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. He stressed that it is necessary to act so that Russia refuses to wage war in Ukraine.

Macron criticized the UN Security Council

I would like us to finally take up the reform of the Security Council, so that it would be more representative, so that new permanent members would work. And so that he can really play his role, limiting the use of the right of veto in case of mass crimes, the politician emphasized.

He noted that it is not about choosing between East and West. All those who respect the status of the UN and common values must be held accountable. Countries that have chosen a neutral position regarding the war in Ukraine are making a “historical mistake”. Macron stressed that these states “become accomplices of modern imperialism and cynicism.” After all, the struggle of Ukrainians is a struggle in the name of peace and the protection of the territorial integrity of each state.

Russia is trying to establish double standards, but the war in Ukraine should not be a conflict to which someone will remain indifferent. Each country must play its part in order to stop Russian aggression.

Macron stressed that there can be no world order and sustainable peace if the principles of respect for sovereignty and peoples are not based.

Our values are universal, so they should never be in the service of a force that violates these principles. In recent years, we have been very liberal in dealing with these values, and this is a mistake,” the president noted.

He added that Russia cannot work on new formats of cooperation and simultaneously seize a neighboring state. Macron also called Russia a hegemon.

How Russia abuses the right of veto

Despite the fact that the UN General Assembly terminated Russia's membership in the Rada, the aggressor state did not lose the right to veto. Because of this, it resists punishment for its crimes. Moscow is constantly blocking the decision of the Security Council to condemn its actions in Ukraine. She also does not allow the UN to investigate the crimes of her army in Ukraine at the UN level.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has repeatedly called for depriving the aggressor state of the right of veto. At the same time, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia was turning the veto at the UN into a “death right”.
