Majority of Japanese for cancellation or postponement of the Olympics

72 percent of the Japanese speak out in favor of canceling or postponing the Olympic Games and Paralympics in Tokyo for fear of another corona wave. On the other hand, only about 24 percent support hosting the major event, which is scheduled to begin on July 23, according to a survey published by the Kyodo News on Monday.

39.2 percent of those surveyed are in favor of canceling the games that have already been postponed by a year. 32.8 percent were in favor of a second shift. 92.6 percent of respondents said they were concerned about a viral infection flare up. In Japan, vaccination is very slow. According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Affairs, only 0.4 percent of the population had been fully vaccinated by Friday. Doctors warn that, in the worst case scenario, the games will turn into a superspreader event and could spawn new virus variants.

Because of the emergency measures in Osaka in view of the renewed increase in the number of infections, the section of the torch relay through the region was canceled. Such a scenario could be repeated at other stations over the next few weeks.
