Mexican priest became a TikTok star during the pandemic
Online priest is a new phenomenon in Mexico that has become popular during the coronavirus pandemic.
When Ezequiel Padilla registered on the popular social network TikTok, he never dreamed of being popular. He just wanted to stay in touch with his parishioners during quarantine and self-isolation.
Publishing his sermons every day, the priest did not notice how the number of his subscribers approached 750,000.
The 48-year-old holy father did not expect any special support and response, because TikTok is a social network for young people. Padre did not think that any of them would listen to his sermons on the meaning of life.
Catholics in Mexico make up 77% of the population. For several years, their number has been decreasing due to the activation of other confessions. Atheism also played a role: the number of regular churchgoers in this Latin American country has fallen by 5% over the past decade.
“In addition to the depressing news and statistics, I believe that people need messages of light and hope that bring joy,” says Padilla.
