New Zealand will permanently ban the sale of tobacco to young people. The government of the country decided to introduce such a ban in order to completely stop smoking. So everyone who was born after 2008 will not be able to buy cigarettes or other tobacco products for life.
About BBC News Ukraine reports.
“We want to make sure that young people never start smoking,” said Deputy Minister of Health Aisha Verrall. She added that the move “is part of a massive fight against smoking.”
In addition, the government has also introduced serious tobacco control measures. The official proposes to introduce significant restrictions where cigarettes can be sold in order to remove them from supermarkets and kiosks.
How did they react in the country
Doctors and other health experts in the country congratulated the reform, which would reduce access to tobacco and limit the level of nicotine in cigarettes.
According to the opinion Professor Janet Hooke of the University of Otago , this ban will help people quit smoking or switch to less harmful foods and reduce the likelihood of young people becoming addicted to nicotine.
It should be noted that now about 13% of adults in the country smoke, while ten years ago there were 18%. But, as the data show, this level is much higher – about 31%.
