On October 7 the winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry became known. In 2020, the award went to Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer Doudna for advancing genome editing techniques. They discovered the CRISPR-Cas9 system, which is now widely used as an advanced and highly accurate means of altering DNA.
On August 3, the death of Nobel Peace Prize laureate John Hume was reported. He received the award in 1998 “for his efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict in Northern Ireland.”
