Poltava Mayor Case: Prosecutors Insist on Detention and Suspension

At the end of December, Alexander Mamai was informed of suspicion of unauthorized dissemination of information about the deployment of units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Currently, the prosecutor's office insists on keeping the mayor of Poltava in custody.

The court must choose a measure of restraint for Alexander Mamai in the form of detention. This was announced at a briefing by the prosecutor of the region Anton Stoletny.

Detention – “no alternative requirement of the law”

According to Stoletny, the prosecutor's office will ask the court to detain the mayor of Poltava on the basis of the sixth part of Article 176 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. Indeed, according to it, such a preventive measure is applied to a person suspected under Article 114-2 of the Criminal Code.

That is, this is a non-alternative requirement of the law,” the prosecutor emphasized.

Centenary also noted that the prosecutor's office had already agreed on the investigator's petition to remove Mamai from office for two months. However, this period may be extended in the future.

Both petitions have already been handed over to the suspect and sent for consideration to the Oktyabrsky District Court of Poltava. Currently, one of the judges has announced his resignation, the prosecutor said.

What is known about the case of Alexander Mamai

  • The SBU reported the suspicion to the mayor of Poltava at the end of December 2022. Later, the SBU said that Mamai was suspected under Article 114-2 of the Criminal Code. In particular, we are talking about the unauthorized dissemination of information about the deployment of units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, committed under martial law.
  • Note that the sanction of the article provides for imprisonment for up to 12 years.
  • Alexander Mamai made public his position on January 3. He stated that he received a suspicion that he allegedly did not commit. The mayor of Poltava also called the suspicion unfounded and politically motivated. Mamai convinced that the information that he disseminated on December 15 at a press conference was allegedly open.
