PPK “Wagner” opposes the Russian army, but at the same time parasitizes on it: ISW analysis

The Wagner PPK opposes the Russian army, but at the same time parasitizes on it: ISW analysis

The Wagner Group seems to be trying to present itself as an effective infidel military structure. However, experts are convinced that it can be called a parasitic paramilitary group.

PMCs lack basic administrative bodies to keep records of their mercenaries and properly communicate with the authorities. This was reported in a report by the American Institute for the Study of War.

Empty coffins are returned to relatives

Thus, there are more and more reports that relatives of the dead “Wagnerites ” receive false information about their condition and whereabouts.

  • State Duma deputy Yevgeny Stupin said that the families of Russians who signed a contact with the “Wagner group” and went to fight with Ukraine complain about the complete lack of news about their loved ones.
  • The Russian edition of Dozhd told a story about a woman who received her husband's sealed coffin, death certificate and medals, but after the funeral she learned that he was alive. He was detained in Ukraine.

Prigozhin cooperates with the Ministry of Defense

Head of the Wagner PPK Yevgeny Prigozhin criticizes the leadership of the Russian Ministry of Defense . However, the structure can additionally cooperate with the MOD.

A well-known Russian milblogger published data that the Wagnerites at Bakhmut use:

  • TOS-1A thermobaric artillery system,
  • various self-propelled guns and mortars,
  • several armored vehicles and a Su-25 aircraft.

This proves that the PMC is still cooperating with the Russian Ministry of Defense. Although the Wagner troops can manage these assets themselves, they are the responsibility of the Ministry of Defense for logistical support and maintenance. p> US intelligence confirmed the competition between the Ministry of Defense and the Wagner group. There is a “split” between Prigozhin and officials of the Russian Ministry of Defense as a result of constant competition.

According to analysts, the PMC is becoming a “center of military power” with its 50,000-strong group. For example, the invaders deliberately avoid direct recognition of the participation of the Wagner troops in the alleged capture of Kleshchevka, Donetsk region, on January 19.
