Rospotrebnadzor explained why a second dose of coronavirus vaccine is needed

Deputy Director for Research of the Federal Budgetary Scientific Institution of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Gorelov explained why the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine is needed.

“The second dose of the coronavirus vaccine is necessary to consolidate a lasting effect and form stronger immunity,” RIA Novosti quotes the words of the deputy director.

According to him, in the absence of a second injection, a person jeopardizes his health and actually levels the effectiveness of the first dose.

Gorelov explained that the optimal interval between vaccine doses is considered to be a period of 30-45 days, but in a pandemic, a month and a half may be too long.

“It is important that full-fledged immunity is formed as quickly as possible, so at the moment this interval has been reduced to 21 days,” the doctor said.

At the end of April, it became known that 11.9 million Russians received the first component of the coronavirus vaccine.
