Russia appreciated the participation of the former presidential candidate of Belarus Svetlana Tikhanovskaya in the meeting of the foreign ministers of the EU member states, which will be held on September 21, 2020 in Brussels. According to the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova, this is yet another evidence of the European Union's departure from earlier statements about the absence of geopolitics in the situation with Belarus, the ministry said in its response.
Zakharova noted that such “flirting with a self-appointed representative of the Belarusian opposition” is an integral part of the scenario of interference in the internal affairs of Belarus and violation of the fundamental norms of international agreements.
She called on the European Union to reconsider the current course, which “leads to the erosion of the international legal foundation of the world order, and in the case of Belarus, prevents normalization in the country.”
Earlier, Zakharova's Belarusian counterpart, spokesman for the country's Foreign Ministry, Anatoly Glaz, said that Tikhanovskaya's participation in the meeting in Brussels is “complete disrespect” for the citizens of the republic, “insolent and open interference in internal affairs”, and also raises the question of the meaning of the elections.
