Russia celebrates the 50th anniversary of the launch of the first orbital space station Salyut-1

It is today, April 19, 2021, that the space anniversary is celebrated in Russia. The occasion for the celebration was the 50th anniversary of the launch of the first orbital space station (OSS) Salyut-1, developed in the Soviet Union.

A key feature of the development was the ability to conduct scientific research both with human participation and in an automatic mode, writes Gazeta.ru. In this case, we are not talking about some earthly scientific work, but about those that are carried out in conditions of a long space flight.

Interestingly, initially the OKS wanted to call it Zarya. But this name had already been “reserved” by China, in the USSR they decided to give preference to “Salyut” – it was this name that was used for all devices of this type in the future.

Salyut-1 was launched from the Baikonur cosmodrome, and was put into orbit by the Proton-K launch vehicle. The legendary event took place on April 19, 1971.
