Russia is expelling the Estonian ambassador, while Latvia is lowering the level of diplomatic representation

The Russian Foreign Ministry has decided to reduce the level of diplomatic representation in Estonia to a charge d'affaires. The aggressor country ordered the Estonian ambassador to leave Russia by February 7.

This was stated in the Foreign Ministry of the aggressor country. The Estonian ambassador has already been summoned to the relevant Russian department, where they expressed “strong protest because of the actions of the Estonian authorities.”

Russia has traditionally declared “total Russophobia” and “cultivation of hostility.” An example of “unfriendly steps” is the demand to radically reduce the size of the Russian embassy in Tallinn.

What preceded this

On January 11, Estonia demanded that Moscow reduce the number of employees of the Russian embassy. From February 1, only 8 diplomats will be able to work there against 21 who worked earlier. The number of administrative, technical and service personnel will also be reduced: from 23 to 15.

An important detail! The Estonian Foreign Ministry stated that in this way parity with the number of employees of the Estonian embassy in Moscow will be ensured.

As a sign of solidarity with Ukraine and Estonia, Latvia is reducing the level of diplomatic representation in Russia.

Given that Russia’s aggression against Ukraine continues, and as a sign of solidarity with Estonia, Latvia will reduce the level of diplomatic representation in Russia to the level of a plenipotentiary, respectively, demanding similar actions from Russia,” wrote Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics.

It should be added that both Latvia and Estonia actively support Ukraine in the war against Russia. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Estonia carried out several expulsions of Russian diplomats. Also, at the initiative of the Estonian authorities, the Russian diplomatic missions in Narva and Tartu were closed.
