Russia increases activity in the Baltic Sea: Sweden strengthens combat capability

Military equipment was delivered to the administrative center of Visby by ferry.

On the Swedish island of Gotland, combat capability has been strengthened against the backdrop of an increase in Russian military activity in the Baltic Sea.

This was announced by Swedish Defense Minister Peter Gultkvist, writes DW.

According to him, “the armed forces are taking the necessary measures to maintain the integrity of Sweden and demonstrate our ability to protect Sweden and Swedish interests.” The SVT broadcaster posted a video on its website showing military personnel and equipment arriving on the island.

It is noted that military equipment was delivered to the administrative center of Visby by ferry. The head of the Gotland Regiment, Mattias Ardin, confirmed that we are talking about about “a dozen combat vehicles.” Some of them are already patrolling the harbor.

The Swedish Armed Forces noted that “deals have been strengthened at several locations” against the backdrop of an increase in “Russian activity in the Baltic Sea.”

The decision to step up preparedness was made to show that Sweden would not be “taken by surprise”. Matthias Ardin noted: “There is concern in Europe. The situation in the field of security policy is developing in the wrong direction, but the risk of armed conflict is negligible.”

As reported, NATO allies sat down at the negotiating table with Russia . Allies are united in rejecting Russian ultimatums and making it clear that it is not in Moscow to decide who can and who will not be part of NATO. For Ukraine, the Alliance stated earlier, there will be no unpleasant surprises, and NATO member countries promised not to make any decisions about it without Kiev.
