According to him, the Kremlin has been spreading fakes about “biological laboratories in Ukraine” for years to create distrust in international peace efforts and health institutions countering biological threats.

Price stressed that Russia's disinformation campaign about “biological weapons labs in Ukraine” is one of many failed attempts to justify its baseless war in Ukraine.

The State Department says that Russia is using a variety of methods to spread such fakes: the country's authorities, propaganda media, websites linked to Russian intelligence, and the use of so-called “experts” paid by the Kremlin.

“These structures work together to constantly throw disinformation narratives into the information environment, creating the illusion of a plurality of voices echoing each other,” the US State Department said.

However, Price stressed that this is not the first time Russia has blamed others for what it is doing, and “Russia's recent Ukraine-related bioweapon statement is no exception.”

“The United States assesses that Russia continues to support an offensive biological weapons program in violation of its obligations under the Biological Weapons Convention,” the US State Department spokesman added.
